Erie Bread Company, Monroe, MI

Erie Bread Company is one of Monroe County’s hidden gems: crisp, fresh-baked breads, excellent salads with house-made dressings, desserts, pizzas, and pepperoni rolls.

13-8-on-9, Erie Bread Company

When I first moved here, I missed Detroit foods like Gonella’s Italian hoagies. Erie Bread was an excellent stand-in with some of the best—and most interesting—subs in the area.

The subs are built on perfectly crusty Italian loaves, or sliced breads like sourdough, and are served “all the way”: topped with romaine hearts, olives, tomato, red onion, hot pickle, “chillitch”, and balsamic vinaigrette.

This is one of my faves—the “13-8-on-9”—piled with capicola, bacon, salami, pepperoni, and mozzarella. Finished with the works, it’s a tangy, meaty sub, packed with crunchy textures, zesty spice, and authentic Italian flavor that makes one feel as though they’re eating something more sophisticated than a sandwich. This is not your Subway footlong.

The Bacon Caprese is another solid with crispy bacon, fresh mozzarella, arugula, tomato, vinaigrette, and pesto, and the “D-Ray” with smoked turkey, pastrami, and provolone.

The “Flying Frenchman” is not a sub, but a sandwich on sliced bread—Pane Toscano, apple butter, brie, tart apple, smoked turkey, and mustard sauce. Here’s a must try: “The Other Pastrami”—Sourdough, pesto, pizza sauce, pastrami, fresh mozzarella, romaine hearts , tomato, and EBC’s signature “chillitch.”

Salads are vibrantly green, topped with better ingredients like candied walnuts, brie, and tart apples, but the real draw is EBC’s flavorful house-made dressings which can’t be found elsewhere.
